APPLE
APPLE

In Messinia, apples are mainly produced at the villages of Poliani and Alagoni. The most popular varieties are Starking, which are bright red large apples and Starkrimson, which are large and elongated. The latter are a clone of the Red Delicious variety. On a smaller scale, firiki apples from Taygetos, are also produced. Harvesting takes place during September and October depending on the maturity stage.

NUTRITIONAL VALUE

Apples are a good source of carbohydrates and vitamins, like β-carotene, which scavenges free radicals that harm body cells. They also contain flavonoids and catechins, which promote cardiovascular health. Furthermore, apples have caffeic acid, which strengthens the body’s antioxidant defense mechanisms, and promotes eye and heart health. Finally, apples have a low glycemic index and constitute a safe choice for people suffering from food allergies.
